Food Safety: A Wake-up Call for Businesses!

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has issued a stern reminder to food businesses, highlighting the importance of maintaining impeccable food safety standards. In October alone, a total of thirteen enforcement orders were served, including eleven closure orders and two prohibition orders. But here's where it gets controversial: these orders were issued due to breaches of food safety legislation, with some businesses facing serious consequences for non-compliance.

Under the FSAI Act, 1998, eight closure orders were served, while three closure orders and two prohibition orders were issued under the European Union (Official Controls in Relation to Food Legislation) Regulations, 2020. The reasons for these orders are eye-opening and serve as a stark reminder of the potential risks.

Some businesses faced enforcement due to evidence of rodent activity, with rat and mice droppings found in critical areas like kitchens and storage spaces. Inadequate pest control and a lack of proper cleaning and disinfection procedures were also cited as reasons for the orders. Additionally, food handling staff were found to be inadequately trained or supervised, and some businesses lacked evidence of an effective food safety management system based on HACCP principles.

Mr. Greg Dempsey, Chief Executive of FSAI, emphasized the importance of strong food safety practices, stating that issues like inadequate pest control and poor cleaning standards are the main reasons for enforcement action. He added that these non-compliances are entirely preventable when proper food safety management systems are in place.

With the festive season approaching, Mr. Dempsey urged food businesses to prepare now and ensure robust food safety procedures are in place to handle increased demands. Food safety, he emphasized, must always be the top priority.

And this is the part most people miss: the FSAI's enforcement reports are publicly available on their website. Closure orders and improvement orders remain listed for three months from the date a premises corrects its food safety issue, while prohibition orders are listed for one month.
